Short Biography

Prof Dr Awaluddin Mohamed Shaharoun was born in Taiping Perak in 1956. After completing his secondary education in Penang, Professor Awaluddin was given a government scholarship to do his degree in the United Kingdom (UK) in 1974. Upon his return in 1979, he joined Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) as a junior lecturer. He completed his MSc in Industrial Engineering and Production Technology from Cranfield UK in 1984. In 1994 he completed his PhD from Loughborough University UK in Computer-Integrated Manufacturing. He was promoted to the post of Full Professor in 1999.

Prof Awaluddin has held many administrative posts within the university as Head of Department (5 years), Deputy Dean (8 years) and currently he is the Dean of UTM Razak School of Engineering and Advanced Technology (formerly known as Business and Advanced Technology Centre or BATC). Prof Dr Awaluddin is active in research and is currently supervising 20 postgraduate research students. His main area of interest is in Integrated Manufacturing and Modeling of Systems. Remanufacturing is a new interest for him due to its future potential.

He has written many journal papers and delivered conference papers in his area. He was appointed as International Advisor to the government of Oman to relook at their Industrial Engineering curriculum of Oman Higher Education Colleges in 2003. He has served many UTM as well as national committees. Currently he sits in the national committee for evaluating Malaysian Research Universities for MyRAI and MyRAII. He has initiated many collaborative programmes between UTM and UK, Japanese, African and Arab Nations.

He helped UTM to develop its Balance Scorecard System in 2010. He has conducted 2 strategic planning sessions with Universiti Malaysia Kelantan in 2011. He has also been appointed as a consultant by the Malaysian Board of Engineers in 2008 to develop their Balance Scorecard System. Within UTM, he has been appointed as advisor to various schools and faculties to help their strategic planning sessions and develop their scorecard, KPIs and initiatives.
